Hymns have been sung in many keys for millennia as an expression of the spirit of the times. “Hymne; levenstekens” (Hymn; signs of life) is a dance with the earthly biosphere, our sacred home and fragile habitat in a time of discord. In words and images, the cross-pollination between faith, culture, nature and art is explored. To this end, we, Erika and Dennis, have had in-depth conversations with 15 people from different backgrounds about their innermost feelings, beliefs and experiences of nature. We also visited countless Breton chapels, churches and cathedrals (we have been living in Brittany since 2020), as well as experiencing and capturing the landscape and floral splendour. The inner and outer worlds meet.
Erika has translated the stories of those interviewed into poetry that is both highly personal and universal in nature. Dennis has compiled a visual story with a refined sense of the sacred, tranquil beauty and meaningful details. The tableau presented highlights inner feelings, beliefs and natural phenomena in mutual connection as a polyphonic song of praise.
The publication Hymne; levenstekens (Hymn; Signs of Life) was self-published by Dennis Moet and me in a print run of 100 copies, format 15 x 20 cm, 112 pages with an introductory story, 61 photos and 18 poems (in Dutch).
